Premature Ejaculation
Premature ejaculation (PE) causes significant social and psychological distress in affected patients. PE is not particularly age related, but may occur throughout adult life and may be intermittent in its occurrence. While there are no FDA-approved treatments for this disorder, physicians commonly prescribe antidepressants such as clomipramine (a tricyclic antidepressant) or Paxil® (an SSRI antidepressant). While SSRIs and tricyclics appear to be somewhat effective in approximately 70% of patients, they require a loading period of several weeks prior to intermittent therapeutic use. They may also inhibit orgasm, reduce libido, and produce tolerance after prolonged use.
The success of Viagra® demonstrated the commercial potential of drugs for the treatment of sexual dysfunction. We believe there is a significant opportunity for a safe and effective episodic treatment for premature ejaculation.
